Kiev Airport Expansion - and Rail Connection to Kiev

A new Terminal will be constructed in Borispol Airport, Kiev. This Terminal will be used for passengers who usually buy low-cost flights.

At the airport there will be a terminal for low-cost airlines. “A tender for choosing a company to operate this project, will take place in July” Nikolay Muzyka, the Deputy Director of the airport, has reported. As he said “The Terminal will be under construction of modular designs, therefore it won’t take lots of time”. It will be able to serve not less than 600 passengers per hour. Cost of the project is estimated as 165 million UAH.  With the new Terminal being constructed, the other ones will be able to accept more passengers and to conduct partial repair. The requests for participation at the tender were submitted by 5 foreign and state companies.

Another very important aspect of railway connection of the capital with Borispol airport is also discussed. “Kyivgiprotrans has already worked out two variants of high-speed transport connection”, the Deputy Director has informed. “One of these variants is the underground railway (metro), which can be built in 54 months and will cost 5 billion UAH. The second one is the usual open air railway connection, which can be built in 42 months and will cost 3,8 billiard UAH”.

New Terminal will effectively increase the flow of the passengers in the airport.

New Low cost Flights to Ukraine

Kiev - 6 June 2008

The German low-cost airline Germanwings intends to open two new routes to Ukraine.  Oleksander Davydov, a Ukraine Transport Ministry spokesman, confirmed Germanwings had applied to operate aicraft along the routes Kiev-Berlin and Kiev-Cologne. 'We are considering the (Germanwings) application,' Davydov said. The report came three days after Ministry of Transport officials announced they were in discussions with an unnamed German low-cost air carrier to become the second low-cost airline servicing Ukraine. Currently only one low-cost airline, Hungarian Whizz Air, is registered to operates flights into and out of Ukraine. The first Whizz Air flight is expected this month. A Transport Ministry decision on allowing a second low cost carrier, most likely German, into the Ukrainian market will come by early July, according to the report.

Talks are in progress between the Ukrainian government and an Arab low-cost carrier as well, Transport Ministry officials said.

Cologne-based Germanwings was founded in 2002 and has a fleet of 27 Airbus aircraft. Its main routes are to East and West Europe.

Ukraine's air passenger market has grown dramatically in recent years, with an estimated 30 per cent expansion projected for 2008 alone.

The highly-regulated sector currently currently is dominated by a Ukrainian airlines charging rates some three times ticket prices offered by budget carriers over similar distances.

Ukraine Tourism Benefits from New Low Cost Carrier!

30 May 2008; Wizz Air Ukraine, the first low fare - low cost airline in Ukraine announced during the airline’s Kiev-Odessa-Kiev demonstration flight today that it intended to operate international routes to London Luton, Dortmund and Milan Bergamo from its Kiev base later this year. Ukraine has long lacked the dynamic engine for growth provided by low cost airlines. Now it has one flying both internationally and domestically to compete against the major carriers that have dominated this market since independence in 1991. When booking flights - check our online hotel prices - www.selectukraine.com - direct fromt he hotels, our prices are lower than anyone elses and contain no commissions for airliners or other intermediaries!

The company will provide affordable and comfortable travel to many Ukrainian holidaymakers and millions of students and workers who live abroad and will now have the opportunity to travel back to Ukraine for less and consequently more often. The new flights are planned to start from 15 September and will complement the airline’s domestic network.

The start of ticket sales for the international flights remains subject to regulatory approvals expected to take place in the course of July.

Wizz Air earlier announced that after obtaining the air operator’s certificate and operating licence it would launch domestic flights from as early as 11 July 2008. The airline’s domestic network consists of Kiev-Odessa, Kiev-Simferopol, Kiev-Lvov and Lvov-Simferopol routes. The initially planned services to Kharkov and Zaporozhie will be temporarily suspended due to airport slot constraints and higher passenger demand on other routes.

Wizz Air’s domestic route network is already on sale with fares starting from as low as UAH 79 (one way, taxes and charges included) while the international services will be on sale right after obtaining the necessary regulatory approvals with starting fares of UAH 199 and UAH 299 (one way, taxes and charges included) for the Milan Bergamo/Dortmund and the London Luton services, respectively (an additional UK government tax of UAH 200 will apply on the London Luton – Kiev flight leg).

"Today's announcement of our intent to launch international routes from Kiev and the very first Wizz Air Kiev-Odessa demonstration flights are new milestones in the development of Wizz Air Ukraine. We are pleased to make the next steps as we have been experiencing excessive demand for low fare air tickets by the Ukrainian people since we started sales a couple of weeks ago." – said Natasa Kázmér, Director General of Wizz Air Ukraine.
